Being an EMT is a hard job. Long hours, back breaking work, sad situations and speeding around to get to the ER. But there are times (standby) when you can chill out and let go of the stress by sitting in back of the ambulance looking like a ninny or drawing silly faces on our surgical gloves.
My brother (who is a doctor) used to be a volunteer EMT in high school - it was a small town that didn't have a paid ambulance service. We shared a room and he had a police scanner in there as well as his beeper; both on 24 hours a day. I can't tell you how many times I heard "Standby in quarters" come across that thing. It's probably the reason I'm such a heavy sleeper even now.
